Great Britain's tradition of furthering opera literacy by commissioning works for schools and community groups, works that offer an opportunity for all to participate while maintaining high musical and dramatic standards, is on display by Contemporary Opera Marin.  Harrison Birtwistle's The Mark of the Goat (1966) is an apt choice for these interesting political times with a large chorus of citizens providing sung, spoken, and instrumental accompaniment.  The Little Sweep (1949) by Benjamin Britten is perhaps the greatest of school operas by the greatest of British composers of the 20th century.  Scored for school-age soloists as well as adults, plus an active chorus, the innocence of childhood must confront the demands of an adult world filled with fantasy and intrigue.
