Paul Smith, Director
The Other Beethoven
The 7th annual Music from Marin Summer Festival presents three programs of lesser-known works, or well-known works in unknown arrangements, by the great master to commemorate his 250th birthday.
Music from Marin Chamber Players
Piano Concertos 5 and 6, Paul Smith, piano
Of course, Beethoven only wrote five piano concertos, but this performance includes both the famous Emperor concerto and the composer’s own transcription of his beloved Violin Concerto in D Major for piano and string quartet.
Contemporary Opera Marin
The *Other* Operas
Fidelio is Beethoven’s only opera, but he did compose other stage works and attempt other operas. We feature The Ruins of Athens, a musical entertainment with dances and choruses, in this arrangement by Richard Strauss and librettist Hugo von Hoffmanstahl. The performance opens with the first scene of his unfinished 1807 opera, Vesta’s Fire, a domestic scene for four soloists which is still very relevant today.
Szervanszky/Cavaye Piano Duo
The 7th and The 9th
The London-based piano duo of Valeria Szervanszky and Ronald Cavaye return to Marin County with piano four-hand arrangements of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and his Violin Sonata No. 9 (“Kreutzer”).
