Trouble in Tahiti, an opera in seven scenes, by Leonard Bernstein (40 minutes)
Leonard Bernstein's early masterpiece for soprano and baritone, and a Greek chorus born of the radio commercial, is as relevant today as it was when it premiered in 1952. The jazzy, close harmony chorus sets the (socially distanced) stage for Sam and Dinah, an upwardly mobile couple have reached an impasse in their life together. An eclectic mix of jazz, musical theater, and operatic arias, with hints of the great melodies that marked Bernstein's future works.
Introductions and Goodbyes by Lucas Foss (9 minutes)
The host welcomes his guests to a cocktail party in his home and then bids them goodbye. Whether the guests actually exist is the question. Written for baritone and (invisible) chorus, this delightful work is emblematic of the compositions of this overlooked American master.
Program length approximately 70 minutes. FREE admission and parking.
